Törner Cryda was the name of an 11th century knight living in the Swedish region of Västergötland. He is mentioned in the written down miracles of St Brynolf of Skara, a bishop locally venerated as a saint for his piousness and the miracles he performed during and after his lifetime. Törner was a relative of Brynolf, who had been excommunicated and by the bishop and banned from communion and, thereby, also from salvation. To retaliate, the knight started terrorizing the bishop's servants, violently attacking them whenever he pleased. When the servants asked Brynolf what to do about it, he told them to counter violence with violence. Said and done, the servants, when opportunity arose, murdered Törner and tore his body to pieces. Upon hearing this, Brynolf was horrified that his relative had been killed, not only on his own encouragement, but without absolution of his sins. Under the cover of night, he gathered the body parts on a stretcher in Varnhem Abbey and prayed intensely over them. At that point the dead man stood up and accepted absolution offered by the bishop, after which he again lay down on the stretcher, dead and at peace.
Törner Cryda is also the name of a rock band from Lund, Sweden. They play rock music with a wide array of influences, shaped by the unique voices of each member and merged into their signature 70s psychedelic pop-folk-rock sound. The band was formed in December 2023 by five students at Lund University in southern Sweden. Being students in history and archaeology, the members discovered the story of Törner Cryda the knight an found it a suitable name for their new rock band. The only student of natural science in the band, drummer and physicist Johan, joined after the fact and had little say in the matter. From the very start there was a common goal to have an air and sound taken from the 60s and 70s, but with a mediaeval touch.
